The city of Samara on the Volga River is scarcely known outside Russia and Central Asia, and yet it is fast becoming an important airline hub for tourists wanting to reach the Emirates, the sunny Indian Ocean islands of Sri Lanka, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Maldives and Goa, Thailand and Malaysia beaches. Tourists should also be attracted to Samara as a Russia travel destination.
There are good reasons for outsiders’ lack of information about Samara, the sixth largest town of the Russian Federation. On older maps it is still marked as Kuybyshev, its name between 1935 and 1990 under the Soviet regime. As such, it was the USSR’s main production centre for military hardware, munitions and the aerospace industry, and birthplace of such iconic products as Ilyushin aircraft, Russian rockets and the launch vehicle that put the world’s first manned spaceship into orbit. in 1961.
During that time, it was a ‘closed town’, but in 1990 Samara reverted to its original name. Since then huge efforts have been made to restore it to the position it once held as Russia’s cultural and diplomatic gateway to the south, east and west of the great Eurasian landmass.
Its international airport, Kurumoch, has recently been expanding its list of destinations, which had hitherto been mainly within the Russian Federation and to former USSR states.
New Air Arabia and Ural Airlines Flights to Samara Kurumoch International Airport
- Sharjah, a member of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) whose immediate neighbour is the wealthier and better known emirate of Dubai, is hoping to promote Sharjah tourism, and is connected by Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost airline in the Middle East.
- Air Arabia is based in Sharjah, whose international airport has good on-coming connections especially to India (Mumbai, Goa, Cochin and Jaipur) and Sri Lanka.
- Dubai, the airline hub of the Middle East and home to the prestigious Emirates Airlines will be served by Ural Airlines.
- Passengers from Samara to Dubai will be able to reach even more destinations, including Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Mauritius, The Maldives and Seychelles by a wide variety of airlines, large and small.

Passengers from all these cities, along with a score of Central Asian towns which already have regular flights to Samara will find it much faster to reach their winter sun destinations using Ural Airlines to Dubai and Air Arabia to Sharjah from Samarai. Since Air Arabia has affiliations to Air Arabia Moroc, it is possible that tourists from Russia and Central Asia may soon find travel to Morocco will also be simpler and cheaper.
These latest developments make it certain that Indian Ocean holiday areas such as Goa, The Maldives, The Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Thailand, Malaysia, and other popular South-East Asia destinations will be seeing a lot more Russian-speaking and East European tourists who can now afford to escape the bitter winter cold on tropical beaches and cultural sites or in air-conditioned shopping malls.
